What’s
New…

In the garden center,
shipments of birdbaths and bird feeders are coming in. We’re also getting
beautiful pottery and gazing globes to accent your garden. We’ll have
stepping stones, wind chimes and more.
Check out our new
line of pots. They are incredible, in earth tone shades made out of rice and
will biodegrade in about 5 years. Talk about going green! |
Test Your Soil!
The
best way to have success with your gardening projects is to make sure you
have the proper soil for your plants. Whether you are growing trees and
shrubs or flowers and vegetables, the most important thing you can do is get
your soil tested. It’s really simple to do and we have the testing kits
free from the U of M. When you get your results back, stop in and we can
help you decide what you will need to amend your soil.
To
loosen up your soil and add a bit more air into it, you need to incorporate
1” of peat moss. This also will help to balance the moisture holding
capacity. If it’s nutrients you lack, add manure or compost, which will
also help to improve the structure of the soil. It’s a great idea to do this
on a yearly basis, or alternating would be fine.
If
your PH is too low you will need to add sulfur while lime will raise it and
sweeten the soil.

Composting Made Easy...
| Try making
your own compost! It’s easier than you think. You don’t need a very big
area, even a 3x3 space in your garden would be plenty of room. Start
with soil and then alternate with organic material such as grass
clippings, leaves, coffee grounds, chopped up kitchen scraps, and even
sheets of newspaper. All of these will break down and add more nutrients
to your soil. Just layer with soil or manure, at least 1” thick, use a
pitchfork and turn the pile once a week. That’s it! You just took going
“green” one step farther! |
